With so many options, knowing which type of Electric Vehicle (EV) is right for you can take time and effort. Here at Charlottetown Mitsubishi, home of AJAC’s Best Mid-Size Utility Vehicle in Canada for 2023, we want to encourage you to make the switch to electrification and want to help make sure you pick the EV that best suits your lifestyle. Continue reading as we explain the main differences between the different types of EVs and highlight some of the advantages of owning an electric vehicle in Prince Edward Island.
Which EV Is Right for You?
There are different types of EVs, and knowing which one is right for you largely depends on the driving that you do:
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
An HEV uses gas and battery power to operate and is recommended for longer road trips and shorter distances with stop-and-go traffic. However, as they rely solely on the energy regenerated from braking to recharge the battery, HEVs cannot be charged and emit more carbon dioxide than other types of EVs.
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
A BEV relies solely on the battery to power the electric motor and has zero emissions. Because they rely on the battery, your vehicle’s battery range is a significant factor for long road trips, making the BEV better suited for city driving, where shorter distances and stop-and-go traffic are the norm.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
PHEVs offer the best of both worlds with their chargeable electric motor and gasoline engine. They offer a worry-free travel range, with the added benefits of reduced emissions and fewer trips to the gas station. PHEVs, like the award-winning Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, have a much higher battery capacity and can operate like a regular hybrid vehicle if the battery dies.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, now available for purchase or lease at Charlottetown Mitsubishi, combines the most advanced EV technologies with a traditional gas engine, automatically switching between engines based on the driving conditions and battery status, making it a great choice for both highway and city driving, and an excellent option for Islanders from coast to coast.
The Outlander PHEV also comes with Mitsubishi’s industry-leading warranty, covering the lithium-ion battery and powertrain for ten years or 160,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first, as well as a 5-year/100,000 km New Vehicle Limited Warranty with comprehensive Roadside Assistance coverage.
Government Incentives
As part of its Sustainable Transportation Action Plan, the Government of Prince Edward Island offers a generous EV Incentive by offering a $5,000 rebate to anyone purchasing a new or used electric vehicle. The Government also offers a $2,500 rebate to Islanders who have purchased a plug-in hybrid model.
The Government also waives vehicle registration costs on EV models, and registering a hybrid vehicle costs half compared to a gas-powered vehicle, saving you $50 to $100 in annual registration fees.
EV Charging Stations on Prince Edward Island
With 19 Level 2 and Level 3 public charging station ports in Charlottetown, including three Level 2 ports right here at Charlottetown Mitsubishi, Islanders have plenty of charging options. Other EV-Friendly cities include Summerside, with 19 public charging ports, Montague has six, and Kensington has one.
